Translating a global brand standard for Indian conditions

A brand manual written in London assumes a climate, a supply chain and a way of shopping. Two of those three change the moment the drawing lands in Chennai.

Separate the invariant from the adaptable

The first job on any rollout is to state, in writing, which qualities carry the brand into a room: the light on the product, the customer's first three metres, the colour of the primary surface, the typography. Those do not move.

Everything else - substrate, fixing method, fabrication base, service position - is adaptable, and the manual should say how far. A standard that does not declare its own tolerance gets broken quietly on site.

What Indian conditions actually change

Humidity in coastal Chennai rules out several engineered boards used freely in Europe. Ambient lux inside a mall is often higher than the manual assumes, so the specified track wattage under-reads the product and has to be recalculated rather than copied.

Cleaning regimes are more aggressive, footfall on a weekend is heavier, and power is not always clean. Each of those pushes back on a finish schedule.

Substitution is a design decision, not a purchase decision

Kota stone, local terrazzo and Indian hardwoods can meet a global standard and often outperform the imported specification for wear and repairability. But the substitution must be drawn, sampled and signed by the brand, not decided at the last minute by a procurement sheet.

We keep a physical sample library for exactly this reason: an approval conversation moves faster with a slab on the table than with a PDF.

Write it down for the next twenty stores

The first store in a market is where the translation is done. Record it as an India annexe to the manual - approved substitutions, revised lux calculations, fabrication bases, lead times - so store two is an assembly job rather than a second negotiation.
